Before & After: Folding Chairs

I don’t know about you but I have a few of these folding chairs lying around… ready for guests and parties and everything else that comes our way (actually, now that I think of it, I should really get some more!). When I saw this Before & After from Apartment Therapy, I knew it would resonate with hostesses and DIY decorators alike.

Before & After: Fabric Folding Chair 2

You could always purchase these beautiful Anthropologie folding chairs (at $200 each, see below) to get an equally bohemian and modern look, or you could invest in a few neat fabric remnants, a bit of cushion foam and a staple gun… and have at your own collection! Guests will wow over your results and love the comfy cushions.

Before & After: Anthropologie Fabric Folding Chair

Before & After: Folding Chairs

{Upholstered Folding Chairs}

p
Time:
1 hour per chair
Cost:
$20.00 each, including chair

Tools and Resources:

* Slatted folding chair (thrift stores and World Market are great resources!)
* Fabric scraps
* Foam for seat and 1″ foam for back
* Dacron to cover foam
* Spray adhesive
* Stapler and staples
* Double welt cord or gimp
* Hot glue gun and hot glue
* Scissors
* Pliers to remove staples, if necessary

1. Choose a variety of printed fabrics to use

2. Measure, cut and staple a piece of 1″ foam around the slatted back starting under the bottom rail and going up and over the top and attaching back under the bottom rail

3. Repeat Step 2 with dacron padding

4. Cut a 1 1/2″ or 2″ piece of foam that will fit the seat of the chair. With scissors, cut the sharp corner off the edge of the foam (bevel it) so it will have a soft edge.

See all directions right here.

    Unbelievable! I found one of these chairs in my neighbor’s trash years ago and I have been trying to figure out what to do with it ever since. I know now, thanks to your beautiful informative instructions.

    I purchased the Terje chairs from Ikea for my entertaining. They were only $15 each, and I temporarily will feed pieces of fabric on the seat and top for a festive party look! That way, every party can have different seats!
