The Sofa: To Upholster or Not to Upholster?

August 23, 2010 by Morgan

Or… maybe the question should be patterned or traditional? I love the look of solo furniture pieces dressed in custom upholstery –  but when it comes to the couch, is it too trendy or completely wonderful?

On the one hand it’s a rather large piece of furniture that might become too dated too quickly, but on the other, it’s the perfect way to liven up a room – and perhaps you’ll be in need of a big change when that dating comes around anyhow.

I’ve been above and beyond inspired… here are a few of my favorite images {including a few chairs in my suzani print and even a more neutral white sofa from MadebyGirl}.

Speaking of custom upholstery, did you know that dozens of prisons around the country are opening up shops {to stellar reviews, I might add}? Now it’s even more affordable to grab your favorite Thomas Paul fabric and cover that living room love seat.

I absolutely love the top sofa from Anthropologie. but to be practical, I recommend upholstering sofas in a neutral that allows you to introduce trendy colors and patterns in throw pillows and accent chairs which do not cost so much to reupholster. but great inspirational photos.

I am actually in the same boat right now trying to make decisions on a couple of sofas that currently reside in my great room. My advice is go with with the one that makes you happy. If later it makes you unhappy you can always reupholster it! Make a statement!
