Check out this before & after, I’m so thrilled with the results!

I’ll be recovering the footstool shortly in the same Thibaut print which I so L-O-V-E. I’d cover every chair in my house with it if I could.
My dad purchased our Stork Craft Hoop Glider as a gift for the nursery back when we found out we were expecting. I loved the comfort of the glider but wanted to add a slip cover for two reasons, a. I wanted a washable option just in case spit up, etc stained the cushions and b. it was a great opportunity to add a modern pattern to the room.
Instead of tackling the project myself (beginning sewing novice over here…) I took the cushions to my local alterations/dry cleaning company (a hidden gem for upholstery work) and had the chair cushions covered for just $15 per piece. I had an actual upholstery company quote me just over $300 to do the same job.
I’m just getting the cushions back now because of my ordering error on the fabric. Lesson learned: always take into account shrinkage due to washing fabric before you determine how much you need! The 54″ width of the fabric shrunk to 48″ and I ended up needing twice as much in length to account for the missing width.
But the glider is in full use in the nursery now and it looks great! I couldn’t be happier!

Just wondering if they applied new snaps for the arm covers?
Morgan says
No, we actually upholstered right up to the snaps so the existing snaps (as well as the side pockets) are still visible. The fabric worked well with the new pattern so you couldn’t really see the transition. Hope that helps!

Did you paint the frame of the glider black? Not sure if I’m seeing this correctly. I love this! I was going to get rid of my old glider, but I am now inspired to keep it. Thanks for sharing!

Morgan says
Hi Dana, I didn’t paint the frame, it was that color, but with a good sanding it probably could be done! We are just now parting with this glider due to space – I have loved it!
Cindy says
I love this! I have the exact same glider and ottoman. Do you mind me asking what the total measurements were that you needed once you accounted for the shrinkage-both height and width. Thanks!!! :)
Morgan says
Hi Cindy! I will have to look back through my notes because I can’t believe I didn’t include those numbers in the actual post. I would venture to say that 6 yards should be more than sufficient at a 48″ width yard, but you may even get away with 4-5 at a larger 54″ yard. Best to take your cushions to your alteration location and double check what they would like to work with. I do remember having to order more because my initial yardage shrunk during the pre-wash process ;). Good luck!

Hopping over from IHeart Organizing! This chair is AMAZING!! What a fabulous tip to take the cushions and fabric to the dry cleaners!! Who knew? Love it.
Morgan says
Thanks, Robin! and welcome :).

Do you know how much fabric you had to provide the dry cleaner? Did you take it to them first before ordering the fabric and have them tell you?
This is the smartest idea ever! Thank you!
Morgan says
Hi Jamie,
Thank you for the kind comment! I actually made the mistake of ordering about 5 yards of fabric before taking the cushions (not the entire glider) into the cleaners to learn that they would need a few yards more. My particular fabric shrunk from 54″ to 48″ when I washed it (important to preshrink just in case you have to wash the finished cushions in the future) so I could have probably gotten away with a smaller amount of yardage had that not happened. I recommend bringing the cushions in and letting them tell you the amount of yards they’ll need just to be on the safe side! :)

I’m in love. If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you pay for the fabric? And it doesn’t look like that fabric manufacturer sells online, so did you order through a store?
Thank you!
Morgan says
Hi Glindy! Isn’t it a beautiful fabric? I’m in love too. Try this link for finding stores that sell Thibaut fabrics: http://www.thibautdesign.com/store_locate.php. Best of luck!

Thanks, Katie! I agree – I wanted something a little more chic but this was in the price range and it was SO comfy. A little pattern and it feels modern and new!

I love what you did here! I inherited a very similar looking glider and am feeling pretty “meh” about it since I wanted something upholstered. But THIS is lovely! Thanks for the tips. I just might be tackling this project.

Oh my gosh, I’m flabbergasted. Who knew about the dry cleaners?? Hadn’t thought about outdoor cushions either! Thanks for sharing such a great tip, Morgan.
Your glider looks fantastic (LOVE the fabric) and adds to an already absolutely beautiful nursery. Lucky Liv!!! ;)

Wow! What a great idea. From bland to super chic, just by changing the fabric… The nook looks simply perfect!!!

Great job! I love that you took a “generic” glider and turned it into something a little more easy on the eyes.

that looks awesome. :-)

A dry cleaning company?! What a great, and frugal, way to turn an ordinary chair into something really unique.
Carol@TheDesignPages says
Morgan, that is stunning! I love the entire nook but especially the owl. I knew dry cleaners could shorten curtains but I had no idea they could cover items. Great tip!!!
Morgan says
Yes! Alteration/dry cleaning shops are amazing. My neighborhood shop has the most talented seamstress who charges a fraction of the price and works wonders on tailoring clothing and cushions alike. She did our outdoor cushions out of sunbrella fabric that I scored super cheap on ebay for, too!
