Project Nursery: A *New* Ottoman for the Glider

June 3, 2011 by Morgan

So this might be a little old hat for some of you DIYers out there, but just in case you’re a little reserved on taking the plunge into basic upholstering (and you have a barstool or kitchen chair that’s nagging at you), here’s a recent project that we finished for the nursery that involves just that.

Our everyday average (but super comfy) glider received a makeover a few months ago, but the ottoman was slow to follow. It’s finally a matching pair!

*****************************************************************************************

Basic Upholstery 101

a
Materials: Staple gun, fabric, scissors, batting or foam (this is optional depending on the current condition of your cushion – I didn’t need extra batting/foam for this project but you could add quilt batting over the top of your foam for a little extra comfiness, or replace the foam altogether. You’ll repeat step 1 with the batting first if you choose to add.)

{1.} When measuring and cutting out your fabric for your new cushion, be sure to account for the outside edge of the ottoman, stool, chair, etc that you’re reupholstering. The top of my ottoman is only 20″x12″, but when I add the sides and extra hem space I’m cutting my fabric to 30″x22″ to allow for 5″ extra on each side (2″ for the lip of the ottoman and 3″ for the underside where I’ll use the staple gun).

If your fabric involves a pattern, make sure that the pattern is aligned with your edges so that you don’t end up with a crooked design.

{2.} Begin stapling at the center of each edge, pulling taut (but not too tight to avoid puckering) as you go. Now you should have a staple in the center on each of the horizontal and vertical edges. Flip ottoman over and examine the final look. If you’ve made any errors, now is the time to pull those simple four staples up (or just one edge) and start over.

{3.} There are two basic ways to achieve clean corners: the first is a fold (similar to wrapping a package) and the second is a gather. For a gathered look, I recommend stapling in two parts. First, gather your fabric on the right side of the corner and staple gather in the center. Next, gather the left side and staple again (this second staple should slightly overlap the first right-side gather so that the corner looks like one large gather). Flip ottoman over and observe your corner. If it looks good to you, finish the next three.

The second gather is folded slightly over the first to create a clean corner that’s not going anywhere:

{4.} Now we want to fill in staples between the corners and center staple on each edge. You really want to make sure that your fabric is secure all the way around and always check for puckering before applying the next staple.

{5.} Your ottoman should be looking good! The last step is cutting any excess fabric from the edges.

Yay for a matching ottoman! For the other half of this project (updating a standard nursery glider), check out this link.

Wardrobe Style Boards: Getting Ready for Summer!

June 1, 2011 by Morgan

We’ve been having that off-on sunny weather here in San Diego – such a teaser for summer. One day the skies are blue and the weather is beautiful and warm, and the next the sky is thick with clouds and the morning is cold and chilly. The good news! It’s just about time for shorts, dresses and everything beach worthy.

Plus, it’s about time the Wardrobe gallery (see button in the left panel) gets a little love and a couple of new additions.

I’m a huge fan over-sized tops right now, they make perfect swim cover ups and have an awfully forgiving fit (especially with that extra bit of baby weight that is soooo slow to come off). Pair this casual look with a slightly snazzier necklace and you have the perfect go-to summer outfit.

For something a little dressier – tis the season for baby and bridal showers – try out a fun floral print. I love this dress because of the casual, soft fabric in a very classy cut. Could easily be worn with a pair of wedges or dressed down with flats. This olive bag is the perfect around-town crossbody hobo.

Sourcing for all of the above (plus a gallery of previous wardrobe style boards) here! Hope the weather is treating you nicely wherever you are :).

Project Nursery: Creative Clothing Art

May 31, 2011 by Morgan

Hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

We had a great weekend full of relaxing and fun. I am reminded on holidays such as this though of the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make each and every day for us. Kevin spent four years serving as a Marine and two of them while married. In fact, our first six months of marriage were spent apart because of a sudden deployment to Japan. I’m grateful that he was never in harms way and I am especially grateful for the servicemen that are. I commiserate with spouses and families that have to be away from a loved one for an extended period of time…

Back to what’s been going on over here decorating-wise: here’s a neat little project that I’ve been working on to create nursery art out of favorite gifts and keepsake clothing.

I have a few adorable outfits that are almost too cute to wear (almost) and when placed inside of a frame, make the perfect wall art.

To add a twist, the back of the frame is lined in a modern print – gives it a little something extra.

***********************************************************

Clothing Art

g
Materials: shadow box or deep frame (mine is from Aaron Brothers – 40% off coupon!), fabric remnant, art to feature (clothing, handmade baby blanket, etc), map pins or sewing pins, glue

{1.} I found a square frame at Aaron Brothers that fit my little swim suit perfectly. It was built like a shadow box and deep enough to allow the suit to be pinned inside without coming too far out of the frame when mounted.

{2.} Fabric remnants or samples are great for a project just like this (I chose Gabriel in putty by Thibaut Designs). Measure your frame and cut out a square two inches wider on each side to allow for an extra large hem.

{3.} Flip frame over and remove backing, cardboard, mat and glass. Line up cardboard insert directly over fabric cutout (make sure back of fabric is facing up). Save mat and glass for another project, set backing aside.

Using standard glue, line the edge of the cardboard with a thick line.

{4.} Fold over each edge of fabric, gluing corners as you go. The geometric print on my fabric helped to make sure that my design was straight on the reverse side, you may want to flip over to confirm before gluing into place. Don’t worry if your adhesive doesn’t hold 100%, the next step will ensure the fabric doesn’t move.

{4.}  Press cardboard and fabric firmly into the back of your frame, the fit should be snug.

{5.} Press frame backing into place.

{6.} Using sewing or map pins (which can be found at office supply stores such as Staples), attach garment to fabric/cardboard combination. I cut my pins to about half their length to really conceal them within the bathing suit.

Pin various edges of the clothing so that the final piece is securely against the frame when hung up.

{7.} And that’s it – now you can hang or display!

This would look very neat as a collage of antique outfits (baptismal gowns, handmade baby caps, etc) over a dresser, or as cute, modern accessories (booties, hats, etc) lined up in a row of three down the wall.

It’s an easy, inexpensive way to display favorite baby items and gifts, and it’s a great way to personalize a nursery. I love this little bathing suit (a gift from my Aunt) and I love how it looks perched atop Liv’s bookcase!

Woah this is getting long. It’s about time I get some final room pics posted. More Project Nursery posts: handmade butterfly mobile, diy crib skirt, basket liners part 2, basket liners part 1, the great glider makeover, sewing the curtains part 1, part 2, part 3, nursery fabric board, curtain fabric selection, rocking horse find, new pendant light, new sconce lighting, vintage wall art addition, changing table makeover, nursery wall striping tutorial, painted animal project, the initial inspiration board and the before picture posts.
