DIY $8 Gold-Rimmed Cheese Board

April 21, 2014 by Morgan

Hope that you had a beautiful Easter weekend! We spent ours out in Tempe, Arizona with Kevin’s family. Sunshine, wonderful people, good food, toooo much sugar. The recipe for a great holiday.

I wanted to share a quick DIY project that I put together for upcoming outdoor entertaining (now that spring has brought with it perfect outside evening weather in our neck of the woods).

This DIY slate (it’s actually porcelain made to look like slate) cheese board was close to $8 to make – less if you already own spray paint – and makes a very easy and fun display piece for appetizers. Love broiled fruit with cheese now :). A row of them would be pretty, or perhaps spaced about a party for cohesiveness? You could also try for a larger or smaller square tile for a different look.

Materials: 1 tile (I chose a 12×24 in a faux slate – it’s actually porcelain), wooden 1″ flat head plugs (found in the finish carpentry aisle), gold spray paint, wood glue, scrap wood

Any tile will do here. I chose a porcelain piece because it was pretty inexpensive ($3.50 for a 12×24″) and because slate is not so easy to find. If you were looking for the real deal you might try a tile shop that sells scraps. Quick note that stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot will often let you buy just one tile from their boxes of 10 or 25 if you just ask.

First up is painting the edges of the tile to give it that extra little bling. I found that rather than taping the tile, I simply placed the tile upside down on a scrap piece of wood and spray painted. It did the trick.

Next is applying ‘legs’. The wooden plugs work perfectly as legs, you could also cut down a dowel to size (especially if you were interested in a taller stand).

Attached with wood glue and allow to dry.

So easy and pretty! I think I might make several of these for outdoor parties this summer.

Enjoy the start to your week!

On a side note… what do I do with all of this Easter candy??

I think that we may have participated in something like a half dozen egg hunts over the past two weeks. I can’t keep this stuff around.

PS more handmade gift ideas here, and crafty ideas (because I love me a good start-of-the-week project to think about…) here.

Happy Easter Weekend!

April 18, 2014 by Morgan

Enjoy your Easter! A few more ideas to take you into a beautiful holiday weekend…

Favorite Holiday Easter Ideas | PepperDesignBlog.com

I’m a sucker for a beautiful cake and I love the wispy chocolate sides (marshmallows are the secret) and the sugar top of this guy.

Here’s another no-dye Easter egg decorating idea to try (perfect for day-before-festivities egg decorating this weekend). Our no-dye idea from this year here.

Ombre Easter eggs.

I made my own shape-topped containers for Liv’s art table (I used wooden flowers from a puzzle) but I might like these bunny jars even more.

Such an excellent statement piece. I love the idea of creating a faux flower centerpiece for Easter or any other special day. Simple, girly, pretty.

Bunny envelopes! Why didn’t I think of that. Adorable.

These are the most amazing DIY bunny ears I’ve seen! They look pretty simple to recreate, too.

Teal + gold.

Have a beautiful, blessed and smiley weekend with your family. Hopefully Spring has found you wherever you may be!

Easter Craft: Decoupage Egg Kits {with Download}

April 16, 2014 by Morgan

Decoupage Easter Egg Kits | PepperDesignBlog.com

Instead of dying Easter eggs this year we tackled a technique that I’ve been meaning to try for a while. With seven of Liv’s little friends over, we threw a Spring Party and tried out decoupaging.

Glassine bag kits were an easy way to contain this fun little Easter egg decorating craft for the kids.

These little kits made clean up a breeze as well (and something that kids can participate in), since everyone simply swept leftover bits and pieces from the finished project back into their bag.

I chose glassine (sort of similar to wax paper bags) because they’re easy to print on with a home computer. I love that they can be personalized for an event! I found mine here.

Simply place the bag right side down in your printer and print just as if you were printing on regular printer paper. I chose to off center mine for a creative look. You can download my round ‘Spring’ badge here, it will look best on a white bag.

Then off to fill the bags!

Supplies for very simple decoupaging include tissue paper shapes, a glue and water mixture, brushes and eggs. To cut out tissue paper circles, I used a craft punch with a layer of printer paper (construction would work well too) over the top. Tissue paper is just too thin on its own and will result in frayed edges and a jammed craft punch.

We added two hard boiled eggs and a spongy brush to each bag as well.

Every 2-3 kids shared a water and glue mixture. I used craft glue and a ratio of roughly 1 part glue to 4 parts water.

Then with kit in tow, the kids set off to create!

The group of 8 kids were between the ages of 1 and 4, so I was impressed with the finished results ;). If you’re decoupaging with a more serious bunch, you might consider using blown out eggs and finishing with a spray lacquer or varnish to help preserve.

This was an easy project with easy cleanup, perfect for a group of preschoolers!

PS count down to Easter! The full party is chronicled over here with more Easter ideas to share here.
