Girls’ Room & a Travel Project: New Globes

October 17, 2013 by Morgan

On Monday I mentioned that we had stopped by the Rose Bowl last weekend. Actually, to visit with everyone that we wanted to see while we were in LA on Sunday, it was more like pulling Kevin out of bed at 6:30am to be one of the early birds at the greatest flea market on earth (I didn’t make that up, the ticket says so itself). And it was worth every minute of lost sleep!

That little gem is so much fun to wander around in. Think world’s largest garage sale (something like 400 vendors) meets world’s best vintage stores – sometimes there are some really awesome deals to score, but most of the time it’s just a really great collection of stuff. I had my eye out for some big items like new dining room chairs or a new comfy side chair for our bedroom, but I didn’t end up coming back with most of my wishlist.

Here’s a little round up of what caught my eye, so much so that I nearlywalked away with most of the below. Top to bottom: the famous Rose Bowl stadium sign (alas, that was not on my wishlist ;)), the cowhide stools that would have looked amazing in our living room if I wasn’t searching for something a bit more modern, the crocheted chair that would have been a yes! if I had a tree branch strong enough to hold outside, the light up letters that I must attempt to DIY, a sweet British flag that I couldn’t justify because I already own two… and my new globes for an upcoming project.

girlsroom_globesrosebowl

In the end? Just a few decorations for the house, one of those being said project globe for the girls’ room. Right now they join an eBay globe on the top shelf of the new bookcases.

I’d show you the other side of the room with the third globe but it’s under construction. Not literally, but not close enough to share just yet.

I love the color of the globes – works so well in this space! but I love most that they are tangible maps for us to play with.

Girls' Room | PepperDesignBlog.com

The plan was for each girl to have their own globe to begin tracking their visits around the world. Kevin and I are big globe trotters and it’s a big deal to me that the girls learn to embrace the world at large around them, and to desire to travel to each and every corner of this giant planet.

It’s hard to see, but we used a mini hole puncher to make small red dots and then used a glue stick to attach the dots to the globe. Here’s the start of Liv’s travel journeys:

It reminds me a bit of the map board project that I made for the master bedroom a few years ago:

Map Corkboard | PepperDesignBlog.com

That’s a vintage frame that’s been hollowed out (thanks to a mini quake that broke the mirror) and lined with cork. The pictures around the frame commemorate our trips.

Red pins are where Kevin and I have both travelled to, yellow just me and blue just him.

Now the girls have a way to track their own journeys, and I hope that the globes grow with them (dare I say – forever?).

Where should we go next? Spppiiinnn!

You can read more about our travels posted on the blog under the Travel Adventures tag. So far we’ve chronicled Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Ireland, Spain and (still need to post on) Morocco. Plus plenty of stateside stuff. One day I might get around to posting pics of Japan, South America and more of Europe, but a lot of those trips were during college, our dating years or just after saying I Do, and that feels like ages ago!

How do you keep track of your travels? I think that journals are a great way to remember special adventures, too…

PS Casa Sugar featured my white & gold placecard pumpkins in their round up. There are a ton of other great ideas, too!

Remembering Taylor’s ‘Sprinkle’

October 15, 2013 by Morgan

Spending time at Sunday’s baby shower made me realize that I have not shared the beautiful and generous shower that friends threw for baby Taylor with you all. This was way back in May! But after tracking down photos from various sources (because I didn’t get a chance to take my own that day), I’ve put together a post to remember the celebration.

They made the BEST food!

We’ve been referring to our round of baby #2 showers as ‘sprinkles’. Do you do that too? It’s such a sweet way to celebrate and prepare for a new little life, but in a smaller more intimate get-together.

As a little craft, each of the girls made Taylor a headband to wear. I’m still waiting until her little noggin is big enough to sport many of the fun designs.

I still can’t believe I was this big… I’m pretty happy to be on the other side of pregnancy now…

but I had a great time celebrating with these ladies!

Reminds me of Liv’s showers here and here. Love my family and friends so much.

Kitchen Pantry: A Few More Details…

October 14, 2013 by Morgan

This has been a season of plenty. We were in Los Angeles this weekend attending the wedding of a college friend on Saturday and the baby shower of another friend on Sunday. It seems like the entire second half of 2013 has been full of these types of celebrations! So happy for all of these new marriages and new babies. Speaking of LA though, I graduated from USC and any opportunity to get back to the city of angels is one that I enjoy. While there we also visited the Rose Bowl flea market (how perfect is timing that we should be in LA the same weekend…) and I found many amazing pieces but actually snagged just a few new finds for the girls’ room (which has taken a regrettable pause).

But first! An update on the new pantry. Because, you know, organization seems like a really great idea when you initially buy all of those boxes and bins and jars, but then the real test comes when you live with that organization. Did I store the cereal in a jar that’s accessible enough for everyone to actually use said jar (rather than stuff unlabeled bags into pantry crevices)? Can I find that bag of flour that I need for a recipe? or am I shoving cans and plastic bins aside until it unveils itself… it’s the little things in life that tend to irk us the most ;-).

We are three weeks in and I think that we can say that we are good! The thought and planning behind how each little corner of this space has, so far, paid off.

Apologies again for the terrible pics…

I thought I might share a few more details about the new pantry that I left out when I first shared the ‘after’ shots as well as a few little additions we’ve made over the past couple of weeks to make this space more functional.

Our Pallet Pantry | PepperDesignBlog.com

So lets talk about dry storage for a minute. New house rule is is that as soon as a bagged or boxed food item is opened, it gets repackaged into an OXO container. I shared earlier how we’ve had to throw away massive piles of perfectly good food because of these guys that sneak in in bags of flour and then cross contaminate. So I bit the bullet and purchased OXO in bulk.

Kitchen Pantry Organization | PepperDesignBlog.com

I loved the idea of stacking the food containers so that we could see what was inside, rather than just shelving them 4 or 5 containers deep into the recessed depths of the pantry. By converting a wine rack into vertical storage, now we can see dried goods that are ready for use – and spaghetti and beans alike are not forgotten about.

Kitchen Pantry Organization | PepperDesignBlog.com

But what about labeling? If you toss that box, the instructions on how to cook (and even the name of said bean) go with. Now I clip out the important stuff and store it right in the container.

Next up on the list was fixing the snack area. The red basket is stocked with snacks for on the go (pre baggied options) while the jars in front are filled with bulk snacks like goldfish and pretzels. I found these clear cute little scoops at The Container Store for $1.50 and they’ve made a big difference in how easy it is to serve the snacks vs. bare hands reaching constantly reaching into the jars. I think they had a range of sizes – good to know for other foods that might need scoops like oatmeal or even dog food.

And that cork there on the right?

Our Pallet Pantry | PepperDesignBlog.com

Those are actually cut out pieces from adhesive drawer liner cork rolls that are framed in red Ikea frames. The wood pallets actually serve as pretty great pin holders so I didn’t worry about tracking down thick cork tiles (like we did for our kitchen art corner).

Our Pallet Pantry | PepperDesignBlog.com

The cork rolls are lined with a sticky film on one side:

But the stick was not strong enough to keep the cork squares up on their own. I used push pins to help finish the job.
